Lion's mane, cordyceps, maitake and shiitake: a beginner's guide to functional mushrooms
By Melt Daily ·
Functional mushrooms have gone from niche to everywhere: in coffee, gummies, capsules and now strips. Our SHARP strip combines four of the best known. Here is what each one is, why people use them, and an honest look at what is known so far.
What functional mushroom means
Functional mushroom is a marketing term, not a scientific category. It usually refers to mushrooms people take for wellness reasons rather than just for cooking. Several of them, like shiitake and maitake, are also everyday foods you can buy at the grocery store.
Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Lion's mane is a white, shaggy mushroom that grows on hardwood trees and looks a bit like a pom-pom. It is the mushroom most associated with focus and cognitive wellness, and it is the most studied of the four for that use. Much of the research so far is in the lab or in animals, with a smaller number of human studies. It is a promising area, not a settled one.
Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis)
Cordyceps has a long history in traditional Chinese and Tibetan practice. Today it is most often associated with energy and stamina, and it appears in many pre-workout and daytime formulas.
Maitake (Grifola frondosa)
Maitake, sometimes called hen of the woods, grows in feathery clusters at the base of trees. It is a popular culinary mushroom and contains beta-glucans, a type of fiber found in many mushrooms.
Shiitake (Lentinus edodes)
Shiitake is one of the most widely eaten mushrooms in the world, known for its savory, umami flavor. Like maitake, it contains beta-glucans and is valued both as a food and as a supplement ingredient.
What is in a SHARP strip
- Lion's mane: 30 mg
- Maitake: 25 mg
- Cordyceps: 25 mg
- Shiitake: 20 mg
SHARP has no caffeine. It is chocolate flavored, which helps with the earthy taste mushrooms naturally have.
The honest part: amounts
A strip is small, and that limits how much it can carry. Many mushroom capsules and powders contain several hundred milligrams to a gram or more per serving. SHARP contains 100 mg of mushrooms in total. If you are specifically looking for a high amount of lion's mane, a capsule or powder will carry more, and we would rather you know that. SHARP is built for convenience: a no-water, no-prep daily strip with all four in one.
Strip vs. capsule vs. mushroom coffee
| Format | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Strip | No water, no prep, easy to carry, mixes four mushrooms | Smaller amounts per serving |
| Capsule | Higher amounts, no taste | Needs water, more to swallow |
| Mushroom coffee | Folds into a habit you already have | Usually contains caffeine; amounts vary a lot |
Who should check first
If you have a mushroom allergy, skip SHARP. If you are pregnant, nursing, take medication (especially blood thinners or diabetes medication) or have a health condition, ask your doctor before adding any mushroom supplement.
If you are pregnant, nursing, taking any medication or managing a health condition, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding a supplement.
