Are supplement subscriptions worth it? A buyer's checklist before you subscribe

By Melt Daily ·

Subscribe and save offers are everywhere: a lower price if you agree to automatic monthly deliveries. Sometimes that is a genuinely good deal. Sometimes it is a way to keep charging you for something you stopped using. Here is how to tell the difference before you sign up, with a worked example using our own prices.

What a supplement subscription actually is

A supplement subscription (also called autoship or subscribe and save) means you buy once and the same product is sent and charged automatically on a schedule, usually every month, until you skip, change or cancel. In return, most brands give you a lower price than a one-time order, and many include free shipping.

That is different from personalized vitamin services, which build a custom pack from a quiz. Those are subscriptions too, but the questions below apply to any recurring supplement order, personalized or not.

When a subscription is worth it

A subscription tends to pay off when all of these are true:

  • You already take the product every day, or you are confident you will. Supplements are part of a routine, and a routine only helps if you keep it.
  • The subscription price is clearly lower than buying one-time, after shipping is included.
  • The delivery schedule matches how fast you actually use it. A 30-serving tin taken once a day lasts one month.
  • Skipping, swapping and canceling are easy, online or by email, with no fees.

The quiet benefit is convenience. You don't have to remember to reorder, and you don't run out halfway through the week.

When it isn't

  • You are trying something for the first time and are not sure you will like it. A one-time order, or a subscription with a first-order guarantee, is the safer start.
  • You take it some days and forget it on others. Deliveries will pile up faster than you use them.
  • The savings are small once shipping, taxes or a higher renewal price are counted.
  • Canceling requires a phone call, a long form or a notice period you can easily miss.

Do the math: compare the cost per day

The cleanest comparison is cost per serving or per day, with shipping included. Here is the math with our own prices for one tin of 30 strips, taken one strip a day:

How you buyWhat you payPer day
One-time tin$33.99 + $5.29 shipping = $39.28about $1.31
Membership, first month$22.99, free shippingabout $0.77
Membership, every month after$29.99, free shippingabout $1.00

Melt Daily prices at the time of writing. Sales tax is added where required.

In this example a member pays about 24% less per month than a one-time buyer, because the membership price is lower and shipping is free. Multi-tin packs lower the price further: 2 tins are $25.49 each, 3 are $23.99 each, and 4 or more are $22.49 each. Run the same math on any brand you are considering. If the gap is only a few cents a day, a subscription is mostly about convenience, not savings.

8 questions to ask before you subscribe

  • How do I cancel? Online, by email, or only by phone? Is there a fee or a minimum number of orders?
  • Can I skip a month, swap products or change my quantity without canceling?
  • When exactly will I be charged, and on what day each month?
  • Is the first-order price the same as the renewal price? If not, what will renewals cost?
  • Is shipping free on every renewal, or only on the first order?
  • Will I be told before a price change?
  • What happens if an item is out of stock at renewal? Will I be charged for it anyway?
  • Is there a guarantee if I don't like the product?

A brand that answers all of these clearly on its own site, before you pay, is usually one you can trust with a recurring charge.

How the Melt Daily club answers those questions

Since we are asking you to hold us to this checklist, here is how our membership works, straight from our membership terms:

  • Cancel anytime from the club page (Manage my membership) or by email. No cancellation fees. Cancel before your renewal date to avoid the next charge.
  • Skip a month, swap strips or change your pack the same way.
  • You are charged when you join, then on the same day each month, or every 2 months on the 2-month plan.
  • Your first month is $22.99 a tin. After that, 1 tin is $29.99 a month, and pack prices apply.
  • Members ship free on every order, including every renewal.
  • If we change your plan's price, we email you at least 7 days before the new price is charged.
  • If a strip is out of stock at renewal, we email you to swap, skip or cancel, and we don't charge for a tin we can't send.
  • Your first order has a 30-day guarantee: if you don't like it for any reason, email us within 30 days of delivery for a full refund of that order, and you don't need to send anything back.

How to keep a subscription from going to waste

  • Match the schedule to your use. One strip a day means one tin a month. If you take two different strips, a 2-tin pack each month fits. The 2-tins-every-2-months plan suits one strip a day with fewer deliveries.
  • Put your renewal date in your calendar a few days ahead, so a skip or swap is a decision, not a surprise.
  • Skip instead of canceling if you simply have extra on hand. Your price stays the same.
  • Check for overlap if you combine products. Some ingredients show up in more than one supplement, and the totals add up.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or managing a health condition.

The bottom line

A supplement subscription is worth it when you take the product daily, the per-day price is clearly lower than buying one-time with shipping, and skipping or canceling is easy. If any of those is missing, buy one-time first. And whichever brand you choose, read the membership terms before you check out, not after the first renewal.

Frequently asked questions

Is subscribe and save cheaper than buying supplements one at a time?

Usually, but check the math. Compare the cost per day with shipping included. With Melt Daily, one tin is $39.28 one-time with shipping versus $29.99 a month as a member with free shipping, and the first month is $22.99.

Can I cancel a Melt Daily membership anytime?

Yes. Cancel from the club page or by email, with no cancellation fees. Cancel before your renewal date to avoid the next charge. Orders already charged will still ship.

Can I skip a month instead of canceling?

Yes. You can skip a month, swap strips or change your pack from the club page or by email.

What if I don't like the strips?

Your first order has a 30-day guarantee. If you don't like it for any reason, email us within 30 days of delivery and we refund that first order in full. You don't need to send anything back.

How long does one tin last?

Each tin holds 30 strips. At one strip a day, one tin lasts a month, which is why the standard membership ships one tin a month.

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking any medication or managing a health condition, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding a supplement.
