L-theanine, GABA and vitamin B6: what is in a calm-focus strip

By Melt Daily ·

Our EASY strip pairs three ingredients you will see in a lot of calm and relaxation products: L-theanine, GABA and vitamin B6. Here is what each one is, why they are put together, and what to keep realistic expectations about.

L-theanine

L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. It is part of what gives green tea its rounded, savory taste. It is often included in products aimed at relaxation and a calm, focused feel. EASY contains 50 mg of L-theanine from green tea, and no caffeine.

GABA

GABA, short for gamma-aminobutyric acid, is a messenger molecule the body makes on its own and uses in the nervous system. It is also sold as a supplement and appears in many calm-focused formulas. Researchers still debate how much GABA taken by mouth reaches the brain, so this is an area with open questions. EASY contains 25 mg.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble B vitamin. The body uses it in many reactions, including making neurotransmitters, the brain's chemical messengers. EASY contains 6 mg of B6 (as pyridoxine hydrochloride), which is 353% of the 1.7 mg Daily Value. The NIH upper limit for adults is 100 mg a day, so one strip is well under that.

Why they are paired

The pairing is built around a common idea: L-theanine and GABA are both associated with relaxation, and B6 plays a role in how the body makes its own messenger molecules. Individual experiences vary, and EASY is not a treatment for anxiety or any condition. If you are dealing with ongoing anxiety or stress that affects your daily life, please talk with a doctor or mental health professional; there is good help available.

EASY vs. UP

Both contain L-theanine, but they are built for different moments. UP has 50 mg of caffeine plus 30 mg of L-theanine and B12, for alert energy. EASY has no caffeine and a higher 50 mg of L-theanine plus GABA and B6, for a calmer head. Many people use UP in the morning and keep EASY for the afternoon or evening.

When people take it

  • Before a busy meeting, presentation or exam.
  • In the afternoon, when caffeine would be too late.
  • As part of an evening wind-down.

One strip a day, as the label directs. If you take medication for mood, sleep or blood pressure, check with your doctor before adding EASY.

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking any medication or managing a health condition, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding a supplement.
