How to take an iron supplement: timing, food, coffee and what to pair it with
By Melt Daily ·
Iron is a little fussier than most vitamins. What you eat and drink around it can change how much your body takes in. None of it needs to be complicated, though. Here are the practical basics, based on guidance from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.
Pick a consistent time
The single most useful habit is taking it at the same time every day. A supplement only does anything if you actually take it, and iron routines are easy to drop. Many people tie it to something they already do, like the walk to the car or the first study break.
With food or without?
Iron is generally absorbed best on an empty stomach. The tradeoff is that some people find iron easier on the stomach with a little food. If your stomach is fine, between meals works well. If iron tends to bother you, taking it with a light snack is a reasonable middle ground. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you choose.
Space it from coffee and tea
Coffee and tea contain polyphenols that can reduce how much iron from food and supplements is absorbed. You do not have to give either up. A common approach is simply to put some distance between your iron and your coffee or tea, for example taking iron mid-morning if you have coffee with breakfast.
Space it from calcium
Calcium can also reduce iron absorption when taken at the same time. If you take a calcium supplement, or a big glass of milk is part of your morning, try taking iron at a different time of day.
Vitamin C is a helpful pairing
Vitamin C helps the body absorb nonheme iron, which is the kind found in plant foods and in supplements. Taking iron alongside a food or drink that contains vitamin C, like an orange, strawberries or a glass of orange juice, is a simple pairing many people use.
A sample day
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Breakfast | Coffee or tea, if you drink it |
| Mid-morning | STEADY strip, ideally with some fruit or a vitamin C drink |
| Lunch and dinner | Normal meals. Keep calcium supplements away from your iron time |
An example only. Your best timing depends on your schedule, your stomach and any medications you take.
Medication timing
Iron can interact with some medications, including levothyroxine (a thyroid medication) and some antibiotics, and these are often taken a few hours apart from iron. If you take any prescription, ask your pharmacist how to space it from iron. It is a quick question for them.
Food sources still count
Iron from food comes in two kinds. Heme iron is found in meat, poultry and seafood and is absorbed more easily. Nonheme iron is found in beans, lentils, tofu, spinach, fortified cereals and supplements. People who eat little or no meat often pay closer attention to nonheme sources and to pairing them with vitamin C.
One strip, one time a day
With STEADY, the label directions are one strip a day. Place it on your tongue and let it dissolve. Do not double up on a day you missed, and keep the tin away from children: accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6.
If you are pregnant, nursing, taking any medication or managing a health condition, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding a supplement.
